Rapunzel looked up at him and pursed her lips together slightly.  ”Don’t worry about it.  Besides, I wouldn’t exactly call that ‘smothering’.”

Smiling widely as Abigail spoke quietly, Rapunzel giggled along with her, leaning in a little as if they were plotting something.  ”I’ll make note of that, wouldn’t want him to get too arrogant,” she chuckled.  She stood upright when Abigail did, smiling as she announced it was time to eat.

Rapunzel was about to take a seat where Tex had suggested, but Abigail patted beside her as invitation.  Rapunzel took it, still smiling as she sat beside his mother, crossing her ankles as she did.

"I did!  It was very lovely," she replied, tucking her hair behind her ear out of habit.  "And how was yours?  Did you enjoy it?"

"You know, that’s good to hear," Abigail said sincerely, muting the television so they could talk properly. "I’m afraid my days are probably a lot less interesting than yours these days." She gave a slightly smaller smile than last time, but a smile nonetheless. "I am going out tonight, though, that’s always fun," she added, looking considerably happier at the concept.

There was a pause while Abigail reached over to the coffee table, picking up her bowl of peanuts and offering them to Rapunzel. “They’re not salted. They’re very good for you. You can have them all if you want, but I doubt anyone can eat that many peanuts in one go. I’m afraid we don’t have much else in the way of snacks. I’m also afraid I’m talking a lot…”

"I’m glad you think so," she replied with a softer smile this time.  As she spoke, Rapunzel’s eyes softened, but her smile stayed.  "I’m sure that’s not true.  I’m interested," she pointed out, her smile growing just a bit.  Letting out a light giggle now, the blonde nodded her head.  "That is fun!  Do you know what you’re doing?" she asked thoughtfully and out of genuine curiosity.

Looking at the peanuts  curiously, Rapunzel smiled again.  ”I would love some, thank you,” she said in reply as she took one for now, delicately eating it.  ”Oh, it’s alright.  Peanuts are good.  And I don’t think you’re talking too much, don’t worry,” she assured the other.

Rapunzel looked up at him and pursed her lips together slightly.  ”Don’t worry about it.  Besides, I wouldn’t exactly call that ‘smothering’.”

At Tex’s joke, Rapunzel couldn’t help but laugh, glancing up at him for a moment as she shook her head.  But then she looked back at his mother, that wide smile still on her face, and nodded in agreement.  ”You know, you make an excellent point there,” she replied in a chuckle.

"He has," she nodded again, "And it really is so lovely to finally meet you," she repeated, her voice soft and genuine and sincere.  "You’ve got quite the son, here."

"I’m very fond of him," Abigail agreed quietly to Rapunzel, completely aware of Tex straining to try and hear. "But we mustn’t speak too highly of him to his face, he’ll get arrogant," she giggled conspiratorially, like her and Rapunzel were old friends. Leaning back a little, she returned her voice to the normal volume and stated one simple word: "dinner!"

Tex chuckled. “Okay, your majesty,” he answered, gesturing for Rapunzel to take a seat on the (secondhand) sofa as he hurried off to fetch the pasta. He wasn’t a great chef - pasta was their go-to food.

Abigail sat herself back down, patting the sofa beside her for Rapunzel to sit too, if she pleased. “So, Rapunzel. Did you have a nice day?”

Rapunzel looked up at him and pursed her lips together slightly.  ”Don’t worry about it.  Besides, I wouldn’t exactly call that ‘smothering’.”

Smiling up at him, her eyes gleamed a little.  ”Just double checking.  That’s very sweet that you don’t hide anything from her, I like that,” she said softly, unable to hide her light blush.  Following him into the living room, she smiled widely at his mother, eyes softening as she pushed herself up.

"Oh, thank you so much!" she replied with a light giggle, taking a few more steps toward her and holding out her hand.  "It’s so lovely to meet you!"

Tex raised his eyebrows. “Uh, actually, she’s just wearing a lot of make-up,” he joked, giving both the women a grin. His mother looked as though she wanted to laugh for a second before she just went back to smiling at Rapunzel. “You don’t want to be too pretty, it stops a girl from developing a brain. Or a personality.” Her voice was playful, a lot like her son’s.

"I’m Abigail, if Tex hasn’t already introduced me," Texas’s mother spoke, taking Rapunzel’s hand in both of hers for a moment instead of shaking it.

He even ignored it when the guy blatantly looked her up and down, all leery and appreciative. But as the guy moved a hand to stroke along her knew, Tex had had enough. "Screw it," he muttered under his breath and marched over, giving the guy a smirk. "Hey," he greeted, holding out a hand. "Texas Peyton, how ya doin'?" Time to mess with this guy. Hopefully Rapunzel would play along.

The conversation was a nice one, she had to admit, something about brush strokes.  And honestly, she hadn’t noticed him looking her up and down, maybe because she was too into the topic of choice to notice.  But she noticed his hand, and she shifted her knee a little, and then Tex came over.  Smiling at him, she quirked a brow as he introduced himself.  ”—And this is my husband,” she stated.

Rolling her eyes at his joke, Rapunzel shook her head.  ”Funny.  You’re funny.  You’re hysterical,” she said in reply, though she laughed at the end.  Out of instinct, her arm went around his waist, and she rested her head against his shoulder.  ”It was more of a friendly chat about art,” she corrected.  ”Why, you want his number?” she added jokingly.

"I know, I’m a hoot," he agreed, still laughing a little from before, though it slowly faded as he took to just smiling at her instead, pressing a quick kiss to the top of her head. "I wouldn’t mind, did you see his jawline? Wow.”

Again, she laughed, turning a little and pressing her forehead into his arm a little.  ”I know, it’s very impressive,” she commented.

Really, she just changed into another dress - a sundress this time, unfortunately she really couldn’t wear those to work.  But she loved her job, so she dealt with it.  When Texas opened the door, she smiled, fiddling with her fingers.  ”You look great.”

As he stepped aside, she listened intently to his explanation.  ”Well, I’m not a murderer so I think we’ll be fine,” she chuckled quietly.  ”Got it.  No games,” she added shortly after.  ”Uh, does she know I teach one of your classes?” she asked, keeping her voice hushed as she did.  She just didn’t want to say the wrong thing.

"She knows everything," he told her simply. "I don’t keep secrets from her. I mean, I don’t need to, she’s very open-minded. She’s cool with you," he assured her, nodding and resting a hand on her lower back to guide her into the living room where his mother was sat eating peanuts - one of the few foods that didn’t upset her stomach even slightly.

"Mum, this is Rapunzel," he told her, a massive grin on his face. With only a little bit of trouble, his mother pushed herself to her feet, pushing chestnut hair over her shoulder and smiling at Rapunzel.

"Rapunzel. Good Lord, you’re pretty!" she said by way of greeting.

Rapunzel looked up at him and pursed her lips together slightly.  ”Don’t worry about it.  Besides, I wouldn’t exactly call that ‘smothering’.”

Rapunzel went home about an hour or so later - that was her last class of the day and, really, she just wanted to freshen up before leaving the house again.  She didn’t know he was making dinner, but she ate something small, just in case.

Finally, a few hours later, she arrived at Tex’s.  She normally didn’t get nervous like this, but this was the first time she was meeting his mother, and part of her wanted to impress her.  The other part?  Well, she didn’t know if his mother knew that she was his professor.  But she was excited, too.  And she bit her lip as she knocked on the door.

Tex hadn’t got too dressed up - after all, they couldn’t exactly afford fancy clothes. Instead, he’d just put on a plaid button-up (rolled up sleeves as usual) and clean jeans - the only pair he had without rips in them. At the knock, he leapt up to answer before his mum did, just in case she started the friendly interrogation. Rapunzel should at least be warned.

He opened the door, grinning at the sight of Rapunzel. “Hey. Come in,” he invited, stepping aside so she could do so. “Uh, just a couple of things. She likes to ask a lot of questions about you, but don’t worry, as long as you’re not like a murderer or something, she’ll accept any answer. And if she asks if you want to play a game, just say no or we’ll lose the whole evening to Pictureka,” he warned, raising an eyebrow and unable to hide a grin.

Still, Tex was grinning at the guy, a ‘yep, she’s with me, aren’t I a lucky son of a bitch?’ grin. “Mmm hm, just wanted to come say hi!” he pretended with faux cheerfulness. And then he gestured over at the bar. “Our drinks are there, Freckles,” he added, giving her a subtle ‘let’s go’ look.

The other guy just looked at Rapunzel, who was looking at Tex, muttering ‘the luckiest’ in response.  With a single nod, she took his hand and looked over at the other guy, saying it was lovely chatting with him before leaving with Tex.  ”You, sir, are one lucky son of a bitch,” she repeated.

Tex snorted at her comment, nodding along. “Uh huh, aren’t I just? Landed me a genuine princess, I can use her for her money.” He laughed immediately to show he was 100% joking, giving her a quick sideways hug as they walked and grabbing his drink. “Made a friend, huh?”

"That’s impossible.  I happen to think I’m an excellent teacher," she mused, quirking her brow as she chuckled.  "Alright then," she added with another chuckle.

She turned back to her desk and began to sort through her plans, to put them away.  When he came back, she looked up and was about to say something witty, but then he winked, and she just smiled and rolled her eyes.  ”You’re adorable,” she mumbled, though she wasn’t sure if he heard.

The rest of the day was spent getting his mother’s medicine, cleaning the house, making dinner for three because he wasn’t sure if Rapunzel would have already eaten or not.

His mother was curious, of course, desperate to see Tex’s new ‘love interest’ as she’d put it, and was pretty pleased with him. It was a good day for her - good meaning she was fully mobile and was only in a moderate amount of pain, and had only been sick twice. And Tex… well he was in a bit of a state. Anxious to see Rapunzel again. His foot tapped as they sat watching The Office as they waited.

Rapunzel went home about an hour or so later - that was her last class of the day and, really, she just wanted to freshen up before leaving the house again.  She didn’t know he was making dinner, but she ate something small, just in case.
